Martin de Witte
renaissance lutes, vihuelas, archlutes, theorbos, chitarrones,
baroque lutes, renaissance guitars, baroque guitars,
stauffer guitars and other 19th century guitars
Since 1997 I am a fulltime maker of musical instruments. The lutes and guitars I build are based on historical instruments wich have survived in various museums and private collections. However those instruments of wich no reliable specimen has survived, such as the vihuela or the 6-course lute, are based on iconographical evidence.
Materials
The woods I use are the same as the ones used by the old masters. They are European spruce, maple, yew, pear, poplar, boxwood and ebony amongst others.
Lute players who used my instruments on recordings
Toyohiko Satoh, Anton & Anna Birula, Hank Heijink, Toru Sakurada, Jelma van Amersfoort,
Janis Aarnoutse, Harjo Neutkens, Jan Cizmar, Trevor Howe, Willem Mook, Ireen Thomas,
René Genis and others.
